This interdisciplinary workshop brings together arts and humanities scholars, creative practitioners and marine scientists to explore how the shapeless, bizarre, and invisible life forms that inhabit underwater worlds are imagined and represented in art, literature, and culture.

Its focus will be on the intersection of scientific knowledge and artistic production in shaping cultural narratives about marine biodiversity. It will ask whether the concept of wonder, defined by the philosopher Mary-Jane Rubenstein as a ‘profoundly unsettling pathos’ and by marine biologist Rachel Carson as ‘the excitement of the new and unknown’, can help us to make sense of the value of these more-than-human life forms in challenging dominant ways of thinking and encouraging us to contemplate ourselves and the world around us in new and unexpected ways.
