IAS Lecture: Sport and the Nation

  • 7 November 2018
  • 2pm - 5pm
  • JCC021, James France

The aim of this event is to explore the relationship between sport, nation states and nations in three countries - the People’s Republic of China, Japan and the United Kingdom.

The event has been coordinated by Professor Alan Bairner of the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences and the main contributors are Professor Susan Brownell (University of Missouri, St Louis), Professor Lee Thompson (Waseda University, Tokyo), Dr Jack Black (Sheffield Hallam University), Dr John Kelly (University of Edinburgh) and Dr Stuart Whigham (Oxford Brookes University).

In seeking to answer the broad question – ‘Why does sport matter to nation states and nations?’ – the discussion will focus on a range of issues such as soft power, the hosting of sport mega events, including the Summer Olympics, the Winter Olympics and the Commonwealth Games, the idea of national sports, and the relationship between sport and nationalism within multi-national states.
