Making ends meet for social housing tenants in the East Midlands

Making ends meet for social housing tenants in the East Midlands: exploring residents' experiences and what could help

This research is funded by Futures Housing Group. The project aims to develop a greater understanding of issues facing social housing tenants around affordability, in relation both to housing and other areas of household budgets, in Amber Valley and Northamptonshire. It will explore with residents issues they face in managing on a budget and meeting their needs on a day-to-day basis, as well as what could help to support them. The findings of the research will be of value not only to Futures Housing Group, but also to other social housing providers seeking to more effectively support their residents.

The initial stage of the research includes a review of existing literature and best practice relating to the provision of support and advice for residents. This first stage will also include analysis of administrative and other data, exploring the issue of affordability. In the second stage of the research, we will conduct interviews with residents. These will explore practical and financial issues affecting household budgets, what can help or make it more difficult to make ends meet, views about services and support available and what could make a difference. The later stages of the research will include focus groups and further interviews with residents, as well as interviews and discussion groups with Futures staff.

We are looking for people to take part who are aged 18 - 64, who are renting their home from Futures Housing Group and live in and around Amber Valley or Northamptonshire. Further information is available here.
