Energy Storage

Interdisciplinary Centre for Storage, Transformation and Upgrading of Thermal Energy (i-STUTE)

i-STUTE is a collaborative project between the University of Warwick, Loughborough University, the University of Ulster and South Bank University.  The aim of the centre is to make significant progress in reducing the carbon emissions associated with current heating and cooling technologies. The centre is looking at both developing the required underpinning science and technology and also the economic, social and policy constraints that are crucial to technology implementation and adoption at scale. CREST’s main area of activity in this project relates to the design, development and characterisation of thermal energy storage systems with operational temperatures covering the range from -35˚C to 200˚C. The research being undertaken ranges from the accurate characterisation of different phase change materials in terms of their thermal and physical properties through testing of small scale laboratory prototypes to modelling of full system applications.
