Francesco Mariottini is an Early Stage Researcher in the SOLAR-TRAIN project on photovoltaic modules life time forecast and evaluation, a European Commission funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN). His PhD at the Centre of Renewable Energy Systems Technology (CREST), supervised by Dr. Thomas R. Betts, focuses on irradiance measurement quality and performance assessment for solar energy.

Francesco obtained his two-year MEng at University of Rome Tor Vergata (Italy) with an experimental research thesis on outdoor performance of photovoltaic modules. After he specialised further in data management and analysis, first working at URMET Sistemi and Cesare Fiorucci (Italy).

Since 2013 he has worked mainly as researcher, analysing both statistics and normatives within various European projects on renewable energy and energy efficiency. He started at Sofia Energy Agency (Bulgaria) before working at Buildings Performance Institute Europe and at the Federation of European Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Associations (Belgium).

The work “Assessment and improvement of ground-based irradiance measurements” (Francesco Mariottini, Giorgio Belluardo, Martin Bliss, Patrick J. M. Isherwood, Ian R. Cole and Thomas R. Betts) was presented during the oral session at the European photovoltaics conference EU-PVSEC 2019.

“Best Poster Prize” was awarded by the Institute of Physics for the poster “Evaluation of Uncertainty Sources and Propagation from Irradiance Sensors to PV Energy Production”
