Alena Pfoser receives ESRC New Investigator grant for project “Tourism as memory-making”

Dr Alena Pfoser, Lecturer in Communication and Media Studies, has received an ESRC New Investigator grant for her project “Tourism as memory-making: heritage and memory wars in post-Soviet cities” (290,598 GBP).

The project will run from January 2019 to December 2020 and will examine the construction and contestation of cultural memories in touristic encounters. It focuses on the case of Russian tourism to cities that used to be part of the Soviet Union and the Russian Empire. Together with two post-doctoral researchers Alena will conduct interviews and participant observations in the cities of Tallinn (Estonia), Kiev (Ukraine) and Almaty (Kazakhstan). The project will draw wider conclusions on the constructions of memory and identity in the post-Soviet space against the background of on-going tensions between Russia and its neighbours. In cooperation with tourist information centres and tour guides, it will also develop practice-oriented lessons for future heritage communication.
