About this event
This session draws on 30 hours of qualitative interviews, taken from my PhD research on teaching Shakespeare at a Chinese university. From the outset, the interviews were viewed from a social practice perspective (Talmy 2010) rather than as research instruments, and I am now using EMCA to analyse not only what was said and how, but also the social actions being accomplished in interaction. In this session I am interested in examining data involving interview participants (including myself) invoking, negotiating and orienting to certain categories (e.g. foreign teacher, Chinese student) and potential incumbency, and how, more broadly, this might challenge the discussions of reflexivity found in much of the literature on research interviews.
