About this event

My data is audio recordings of calls from members of the public to a housing charity helpline in the UK. The helpline is intended to provide assistance to those who are in immediate need of somewhere to stay. The focus for this session is when the caller orients to their own subjectivity (e.g., displaying a cognitive state, emotion, stance, complainability), and how these (non)lexical subject-side displays may project future courses of action (e.g., ‘I’ve got to the point where I’m going to do X’). I am interested in the ways in which the caller’s subjectivity is produced and managed by the participants within the broader institutional project of the call. In the case I shall be sharing, the caller talks of suicide.
