About this event

In this talk I examine colour trouble in public transport, manifest in a YouTube video of a racist outburst of a ‘white’ passenger and the responses of other carriage members. Building on a preliminary analysis by Paul Gilroy of the video of the event, I will revisit and draw upon earlier EMCA studies of rights, racism and public space. My ambition is to shift focus from the ‘unwitting, racist madonna’, to the problem she poses for the passengers. I will describe how the passengers become a public in the face of one passenger attacking them and attracting inviduals into taking her on. The racist insults not only target emotions at certain faces, they also shape entitlements and types of responses, and prompt others to maintain or abandon their position as bystanders.
