About this event

I am bringing data from a corpus I collected with Prof. Elizabeth Stokoe. We are examining interactions between staff members at university who are responsible for Health and Safety. In the Health and Safety (H&S) conversations in our corpus, staff are typically assessing (inspecting or auditing) how well a H&S measure has been implemented or whether a piece of furniture or equipment follows H&S policy. Other staff members present must adjust their behaviour or change their gear in order to be compliant with H&S policy. The degree to which they show willingness to comply varies.

In this extract, the staff member has a piece of equipment in his office that is not compliant with H&S policy. The equipment was found during an inspection. The H&S-responsible staff must now convince the owner of the equipment to remove the equipment and order a replacement.
