Pioneering fuel cell technology

  • Loughborough research initiates global spin-out company and creates a new technology sector

Fuel cell technology research originated at Loughborough in 1988. During the intervening 25 years, the ground-breaking work has given rise to a new generation of clean power systems based on advanced fuel cell technology.

In 1995, the research team constructed the first 1kW proton exchange membrane fuel cell, and spin-out company Advanced Power Sources – now Intelligent Energy (2001) – was launched to explore the pre-commercial development of prototype fuel cells.

Intelligent Energy now numbers more than 350 highly skilled employees, and works closely with Loughborough experts as well as global industrial partners on a range of projects. Its global headquarters are part of the thriving energy cluster on Loughborough University Science and Enterprise Parks (LUSEP).

The company’s success has helped to drive the expansion of LUSEP and support major funding bids which will provide a long-term boost for the local economy and secure Loughborough’s future as a centre for knowledge-based high-growth industry.

In November 2013, the company was ranked 15th in the Deloitte Fast 50 with 1,333% revenue growth over five years. A further accolade was added in February 2014, when Intelligent Energy was announced as the Midlands’ fastest growing company in the Insider Growth 100, having quadrupled its revenue from £3.06m in September 2008 to £11.9m in 2011, and then quadrupling it again to £43.9m the following year.

In July 2014, the company received a further accolade – being named the most successful company by the UK Science Park Association.

As fuel costs rise and supplies diminish, fuel cell technology is a rapid growth sector – safeguarding future transportation whilst protecting the environment. Intelligent Energy is already a key player in this imperative 21st century industry.
