Research Themes

Innovative Construction Technologies:

The development of novel technologies for enhancing the performance of built assets through life including construction materials technology (advanced composites), construction techniques (e.g. offsite construction), and the modelling of the performance of facilities (e.g. finite element analysis).

Construction Business Processes:

Improving value and efficiency in design and construction, collaborative and concurrent engineering, knowledge management, and innovation delivery within the supply chain. 

Advanced Information and Communications Technologies:

Mobile technologies, collaborative prototyping, ICT enabled information management, and collaborative systems. 

Sustainable design and construction: energy conservation, building design optimisation, implications of climate change on design and construction, and reuse and recycling of materials and components.

Transport and Infrastructure: transport operations and management, modelling, telematics and sustainable travel and infrastructure engineering such as highway pavement materials performance.

What sort of projects?

The EngD project or series of smaller projects must be able to demonstrate innovation in the application of knowledge to the engineering business as well as fit within the above themes. The research work should aim to make a significant contribution to the company and thus has to be in the mainstream work, not a 'student' project on the sidelines.  The project(s) will be finalised jointly by the academics, sponsoring company and  candidate (when recruited), to agreed objectives, deliverables and timescales and the regular monitoring against these targets.
