Modules Available

Those who already hold an MSc or MEng need only take 60 Credits to complete their taught element. That consists of 30 credits of compulsory modules and another 30 credits of optional modules over the first two years.

Researchers who do not hold an MSc will need to take 180 credits (including 90 compulsory credits – 60 of which are a research dissertation at the end of the 2nd year). This dissertation can form part of the final thesis and can be substituted as the 2nd year report.

Compulsory Modules for Research Engineers taking 180 credits

Optional Modules (Semester 1 and Semester 2)

Modules with a total weight of at least 60 credits from any of the MSc Programmes run within the Faculty of Engineering.

For those taking 180 credits, modules with a total weight of no more than 30 credits to be selected from postgraduate suitable modules run by other Faculties at Loughborough University.

All modules selected must be Postgraduate, prefixed with a 'P'.


  1. Research Engineers on the EngD programme who have a reduced coursework load can select any set of modules in accordance with the requirements of their research load.
  2. All Research Engineers should consult both their Academic and Industrial Supervisors before choosing their modules.
  3. Candidates that are able to attend Semester 1 modules on a weekly basis are welcome to do so.
  4. REs may take modules from other MSc Courses on offer in the Faculty and University. REs must request permission to attend these modules from the Module Tutor and inform the Centre Administrator of the Module code and date it is running. Module specifications can be found here. Postgraduate modules are prefixed as with a 'P', e.g., 06CVP005.
