International conference to explore the media and politics

A major international conference exploring the relationship between the media and politics will be held for the first time at Loughborough University.

The International Journal of Press/Politics conference will take place between 15-17 September on the University’s Science and Enterprise Park.

It will see 65 delegates from five continents and eighteen countries attend the event. The research they will present covers 50 countries across all continents but Antarctica.

The conference brings together academics conducting internationally relevant research on the relationship between news media and politics around the world.

It will begin with a keynote speech from Stuart Soroka, Professor of Communication Studies and Political Science at the University of Michigan. The talk will be titled “On the Increasing Viability of Good News.”

The conference will end with an all-female roundtable, bringing together distinguished scholars from the UK and the US, to discuss the latest advances and challenges to research on media and politics.

Dr Cristian Vaccari, a Reader in Political Communication at Loughborough University and Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Press/Politics, said: “The conference is now in its fifth year and this is the first time it has been held at Loughborough University. It aims to provide a forum for academics to advance research in this area.

"One of the key characteristics of the journal is its international orientation and this is reflected very well in the work to be presented at the conference, as well as the participants who will be attending. We are looking forward to welcoming the delegates to the University and learning about their research.”

The event is being supported by the University’s Centre for Research in Communication and Culture
