Beesley and Dobbin help Europe to victory over USA

Loughborough duo Meghan Beesley and Beth Dobbin helped Europe comfortably beat the United States to win the inaugural The Match athletics event in Minsk, Belarus.

A strong performance from the Europeans saw them ease home, winning by a 724.5-601.5 margin.

Dobbin secured second place in the 200m, continuing her fine form this season to add 7 points to Europe’s tally.

Team Europe also took a clean sweep in the women’s 400m hurdles with Beesley taking advantage of Ashley Spencer’s fall to finish third in a time of 55.49.

After her run, Beesley said:

“I love competing for Europe, last year I ran 55.55 and today I ran a bit quicker.

“It’s definitely a step in the right direction going for the Worlds now, as it’s been an up and down season. That was definitely a more competitive race form me.”

The Match is the last major athletics event before the World Championships in Doha from 27 September to 6 October.
