Loughborough hosts visit from the Government’s Science and Innovation Network

On 5 November Loughborough University welcomed a group of international visitors from the Science and Innovation Network, which is jointly funded by the Government’s Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

The Science and Innovation Network promotes collaboration between the UK and overseas. Its staff, based in 28 countries, work with local science and innovation communities to support UK policy overseas. They create important relationships to best use the value of science and innovation discoveries and investments overseas, which brings mutual benefits to the UK and the host country.

The group went to a number of places on campus to see just some of the pioneering work taking place at Loughborough. They began with a visit to the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine East Midlands to learn more about how the University’s world-class expertise is being applied to policies and practice that will benefit the health and wellbeing of the nation – from everyday people at risk of ill health through to elite athletes.

The delegates then went to the Wolfson School to learn more about the work of the Additive Manufacturing Research Group and to hear about the pioneering device, developed by Dr David Kerr and Dr Kaddour Bouazza-Marouf, which transforms paralysis sufferers’ breath into words.

The tour concluded with a visit to the Sports Technology Institute to hear how staff expertise is informing the ongoing development of sports equipment and apparel.
