Prestigious textile prizes for Loughborough Students

Loughborough University School of the Arts students have scooped an impressive collection of awards in the Bradford Textile Society’s Design Competition.

The Bradford Textile Society is the oldest textile society in Britain.  Its annual Design Competition provides encouragement and inspiration to students and designers and aims to stimulate new developments in textile design and construction.  Prize money for the awards totals £10,000 and this year there were a record 930 entries.

Emily Gutsell-Butcher, a second year student from Bury St Edmunds won the £400 first prize in the category ‘innovative combination of textile processes for the fashion market.’ 

Lily Emma Tennant, a final year student from Nottingham took second prize in the category ‘woven fabric for interiors.’  Loughborough’s Lindsey Cormack from Liversedge and Alexandra Streatfield-James from Gibralter were both commended in this group.

A runner up place was also awarded to Naomi Ison, a second year student from Nottingham in the award for ‘woven fabric for men’s or women’s wear.’

Loughborough’s trio of second places was completed by Lauren Topliss, a finalist from Leicester, who took her award for ‘fabric of any construction for fashion or interiors made from British wool, which enhances the intrinsic qualities of natural British wool.’

Each of the second placed students were awarded £250 in prize money.

Loughborough’s success was completed by two further commendations. These were presented to Amelia Gibbs for ‘innovative combination of textile processes for the interiors market’ and Kelly Lovatt in a category especially for first year students, ‘woven fabric in any fibre or blend.’

Commenting on the success of the students Andrew Selby, Head of Department for the School of the Arts said: “It is a testament to the talent of our students and the quality of the teaching staff at Loughborough that they came away with so many awards and commendations.  We are proud of them and delighted with their success.”
