Inês Varela-Silva

I am a Senior Lecturer in Human Biology and have been in Loughborough for 12 years.

I travel a lot because of the kind of research I do, but I also travel because I love to know new places and cultures. I run and do yoga. I am an avid theatregoer, occasional community theatre performer and music lover.

International Women’s Day is a bittersweet day for me. I have been actively involved in organising events that promote women’s rights for many years. I fight for gender equality whilst I am very aware that gender gaps are not the only issue. Gender intersects with other social factors, such as race and sexual orientation, that keep a great segment of the world’s population under the dominance of a small but powerful group. I hope that one day we don’t need an International Women’s Day, but that day is very far away and until it comes, and while I am alive, I will keep going.
