VIV-series-booksVision In Vehicles Conference Series

The International conference series on Vision in Vehicles ran from 1985 to 2006. The prime purpose of the meetings was to share information on current research. Conferences were held across Europe, in the USA and Australia. Each conference produced a book of edited proceedings and these can be purchased via the links below.

Aims of the series

Vision is of paramount importance in vehicle control and visual information must be presented in a way that can be rapidly assimilated by the vehicle controller. The aim of the first VIV conference was to investigate the problem of vision in relation to the control of vehicles and to develop an integrated approach to the subject. Consequently the VIV multi-disciplinary conferences provided an international forum for the exchange of information on current research encompassing all aspects of vision and its relationship to vehicle design. This included the internal and external design of the vehicle itself, as well as the perceptual and cognitive capabilities and limitations of the vehicle controller.

The scope of the conference series covered all types of vehicles (e.g. cars, trucks, trains, aircraft, helicopters, ships, military vehicles, autonomous vehicles) where the task involves monitoring both in-vehicle displays and the surrounding visual environment in both day and night-time conditions. By default, and not by design, a majority of papers tended to deal with cars.

The VIV conferences therefore attracted psychologists, ergonomists, ophthalmologists, optometrists, highway engineers, traffic planners, lighting engineers, vehicle and instrument designers from any of the above industries, legislators and anyone concerned with safety in vehicles.
