Archives
In the UK there are about 250 publicly funded repositories. National archives services are housed in the Public Record Offices for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, whilst local authorities provide Record Office services on a district or county level. CIPFA figures show that in 1996-97 481,000 readers consulted one million documents in local authority record offices. Local authority archive services had 933 members of staff (including 326 archivists) with net revenue expenditure at about £27 million. There are also specialist archives in universities and businesses. These archives employ in total approximately 2,000 professional archivists, record managers and conservators, with about 2,000 support staff (FTE). They receive nearly a million reader visits a year and hold about a million metres of shelving. About half the material is fully listed. Copies of most lists, and computerised indexes to them, are held centrally by the National Register of Archives maintained by the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts.
