Global Buzz - June 2010

Global Buzz is an ‘immediate measure' of globalization: it indicates levels of global activity that are happening within selected cities over a given month. This short-term measure allows cities to be closely monitored over time. Results are produced for 62 cities in the form of % global buzz occurring in each city.

The first results were released for September 2009; here we release the results for June 2010 and the ninth set of monthly change results. There are two tables below that provide the detailed levels of Global Buzz and the monthly change.

Main points:

  • The main feature this month has been the increased concentration of Global Buzz at the top of the rankings. Only 11 cities increased their % of Global Buzz among which the top two were ranked 3rd (Singapore) and 1st (Hong Kong).
  • The biggest winner was Hong Kong which doubled its Global Buzz in the month to create a duopoly with Singapore at the top: over a quarter of Global Buzz was recorded in these two cities.
  • The other big winner was Mumbai coming from outside the top 20 in rising to 3rd – its first time in the top ten, leap-frogging London and New York who remain 4th and 5th respectively.
  • Moscow was a big gainer of buzz in May but is a loser in June dropping 6 places to 9th ; Paris is also a loser dropping five places to leave the top ten (in 11th place).
  • Los Angeles is the 4th highest mover and re-enters the top ten in 7th position (from 14th in May).
  • Shanghai maintains its top ten position rising from 8th to 6th (fifth highest mover) and Bangkok joins the top ten moving up 3 places from 13th in May.
  • The 6th biggest mover is Taipei joining the top 20 in 17th position (up 18 places) indicating further concentration of Global Buzz in Pacific Asia.
