Global Buzz - May 2010

Global Buzz is an ‘immediate measure' of globalization: it indicates levels of global activity that are happening within selected cities over a given month. This short-term measure allows cities to be closely monitored over time. Results are produced for 62 cities in the form of % global buzz occurring in each city.

The first results were released for September 2009; here we release the results for May 2010 and the eighth set of monthly change results. There are two tables below that provide the detailed levels of Global Buzz and the monthly change.

Main points:

  • Singapore records the largest rise in buzz in May to spectacularly consolidate its number 1 position. It has more than twice the buzz of second placed Hong Kong.
  • The largest fall in buzz is recorded by Chicago. Chicago was ranked second last month because of the Global City Summit held in the city. However it retains its top ten position.
  • There are 4 US cities in the top ten: with Chicago at 10th , there are also New York at 4th, Boston at 7th (up from 15th) and Washington still at 9th .
  • Moscow is the other big gainer of buzz in May and rises to third rank (from 6th); the usual two other European cities in the top ten are also there in May: London remains fifth with Paris 6th (up from 10th).
  • Shanghai returns to the top ten (8th up from 12th) making 3 Pacific Asian cities in the top ten – Tokyo just drops out at 11th (from 8th).
  • Dubai leaves the top ten: from 7th down to 12th.
