Global Buzz - February 2010
Global Buzz is an ‘immediate measure' of globalization: it indicates levels of global activity that are happening within selected cities over a given month. This short-term measure allows cities to be closely monitored over time. Results are produced for 62 cities in the form of % global buzz occurring in each city.
The first results were released for September 2009; here we release the results for February 2010
and the fifth set of monthly change results. There are two tables below that provide the detailed levels of Global Buzz and the monthly change.
Main points:
- Hong Kong has returned to number one spot and Singapore has dropped to third. However both cities record large % negative change since January: Singapore has the largest absolute fall and Hong Kong the 5th largest fall.
- The big surprise is the rise of Bangkok to second place, a rise of 16 places from January. The large absolute change recorded may be a technical effect of web reorganization – watch this spot next month.
- Vancouver has risen 12 places to reach the top 10 in 9th place. This is much less of a surprise and reflects the Winter Olympics as global buzz.
- New York and London have both slightly fallen in rank to 4th and 7th ranks respectively whereas Paris remains at 6th place despite having the third highest % change.
- It is no change for Moscow and Dubai in ranking who remain at 5th and 8th respectively but both record absolute positive % changes since January.
- Overall US cities have done badly with New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Washington, Boston and Los Angeles all in the bottom 11 for % change.
- The big movers in the lower echelons of the tables are Frankfurt (up 19 places), and Abu Dhabi (up 18 places), on the back of the 6th and 5th highest % changes respectively.
