P.J. Taylor, A. Firth, M. Hoyler and D. Smith

The data collection was part of the project Cities in Economic Expansion and Current Crisis of the Modern World-System, funded by the Leverhulme Trust (2007-2010)

These data constitute the basis of part of the analysis in GaWC Research Bulletin No. 316 “Explosive City Growth in the Modern World-System: An Initial Inventory Derived from Urban Demographic Changes”.

The data consist of the following:

  1. The initial five city rosters (1600, 1700, 1800, 1900, 2007)
  2. Demographic change for all initial roster cities (% change per annum)
  3. Typologies of demographic spurts (16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th centuries)
  4. Air travel connections: the alternative measure of explosive city growth for 1970-2005
