Loughborough Materials Characterisation Centre (LMCC) is a specialist facility offering a wide range of analytical techniques, some of which have capabilities unique within the UK. Its team undertakes a variety of projects and offers a full sample preparation, analysis and report service.  It can also provide training so that clients can conduct analysis themselves.

LMCC is home to a large number of analytical instruments which can be used for the characterisation of a variety of materials including metals, ceramics and polymers.

As well as making use of sophisticated analytical techniques, the Centre develops new methods and capabilities – working with leading instrument manufacturers to help them improve their products and shift the boundaries in materials analysis.

To date, they have worked across a range of industrial sectors – including automotive, aerospace, power generation and pharmaceuticals.  The companies assisted include Brush, 3M, Tata and BAe Systems along with other academic institutions such as Birkbeck University of London.

In addition to supporting materials research throughout Loughborough University, LMCC staff also undertake their own research in a number of areas including:

They are currently involved in several collaborative research projects with organisations in the UK and abroad as well as supporting undergraduate and postgraduate teaching within the Department of Materials.
