Health and safety expertise

Loughborough expert
Mike Harris, Occupational Hygiene Consultant

Maintaining a good health and safety record isn’t just about protecting the well-being of employees – it can also improve productivity and business success by reducing time lost due to work-related illness and workplace accidents.

For more than 30 years, Mike Harris has undertaken in excess of 1,000 occupational hygiene surveys and associated investigations. He continues to provide an occupational hygiene service to small and medium sized enterprises as well as multinational businesses and large organisations.

As an Occupational Hygiene specialist, his work involves recognising and evaluating potential workplace dangers arising from biological, chemical, ergonomic and physical hazards whilst proposing practical and cost effective solutions to control the risk.

Investigations are conducted across a veritable A-Z of workplaces – bus depots, chemical and engineering manufacture, foundries, hospital theatres, laboratories, offices, quarries and workshops – and may involve assessments of workplace and environmental air quality, occupational and environmental noise exposure, radiation and thermal comfort conditions.

For many years, two Leicestershire organisations have called on Mike’s expertise to help them comply with HSE protocols and be socially responsible.

Harrison Castings – the largest non-automotive aluminium sand foundry in the UK – supplies industry with a range of products including compressors, gas turbines, machine tools, medical equipment, and photo imaging drums.

The nature of its work means that the foundry needs to regularly monitor the safety of its environment and evaluate its control measures to ensure the well-being of its employees. Mike conducts air monitoring and analysis tests as well as occupational noise surveys to assess health risks and make recommendations for best practice.

The Spire Hospital Leicester engages Mike’s expertise to undertake air sampling across its facilities, including operating theatre areas. These tests determine typical occupational exposure levels to anaesthetic gases experienced by staff and the effectiveness of scavenging and ventilation control systems.
