Loughborough University launches ‘Experts in Sport’ podcast

Loughborough University has officially launched its new ‘Experts in Sport’ podcast, led by the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences.

Hosted by Applied Sport Management Lead Martin Foster, the new series will see experts from across Loughborough University joined by external thought leaders to discuss the latest research and hot topics in sport and academia.

The series begins with a discussion on sports psychology with Professor Paul Wylleman from the University of Brussels, alongside Loughborough University’s Dr Karl Steptoe.

Here, the role Sport Psychologists play at elite level is discussed, as is the development of the discipline, and the importance of adopting an interdisciplinary approach. Professor Wylleman also talks about the relationship with sports coaches and national governing bodies, and how there is no one-size-fits-all approach for his profession.

The full episode can be found below and is also available to download from iTunes, Spotify, and TuneIn. Listeners can also subscribe to the channel and will receive an alert once new episodes are published.

On the launch of the new podcast, Martin Foster said:

“It’s great to get this podcast out there, as we have so many amazing academics and practitioners working with us on campus. This podcast will help us disseminate our internationally recognised research and practice and will continue to shape policy and practice on a global scale.”

Loughborough University students will also be heavily involved in the production of the podcast, as Martin explains:

“Developing students that are ready for the world of work is an essential part of the graduate experience. Through working with the Coach and Volunteer Academy (CVA) we develop various opportunities for our students to work on real-life projects and this podcast is an example of that.

“It has been developed with a group of current students and that will continue through the series. A special thanks needs to go to MSc Sport Management student Siddhanth Dsouza who has been instrumental in developing this podcast so far.”

Future episodes will see Martin joined by a variety of guests covering topics including ‘Will Brexit destroy the Premier League’, ‘Let’s talk about the menstrual cycle: how it can affect performance and what athletes and coaches should be doing’, and ‘The mapping of corruption in sport’.
