The annual Fruit Routes harvest event returns to Loughborough University from 18 – 21 October with a range of enjoyable harvesting activities.
Staff, students and the local community are invited to the celebrations, which features a campus apple 'bake off'.
Programme highlights over the three-day event include:
- Apple harvesting, where all are welcome to pick abundant fruit from trees on campus.
- An early bird run, led by Anne-Marie Culhane, where joggers can explore, forage and enjoy a fruity breakfast.
- Apple pressing with Transition Loughborough – make your own juice, or take home to make cider.
- Harvest day celebration with the Landscaping and Gardening Society (LAGS) and Transition Loughborough - featuring walks, food, and apple bake off judging.
Featured as part of the event is the launch of Bathaus on 20 October. Commissioned by LU Arts and designed by Studio Weave, the unique campus cottage houses a colony of bats.
Fruit Routes is an artist-led initiative aiming to ‘create an edible campus’ by planting fruit trees, increasing foraging opportunities and sharing knowledge with the wider community through engaging events.
The project is organised by Jo Shields, Sustainability Manager at Loughborough University and project founder, artist Anne-Marie Culhane.
Speaking about this year’s event, Jo Shields said: “Harvest is a wonderful time to visit and explore the campus, and we look forward to hosting another year of Fruit Routes here.
“There are plenty of fun and family-friendly activities on offer – and we hope to see lots of entries to the apple bake off from Loughborough students, staff and members of the public alike.”
