Thousands expected at Loughborough University open days

Open Day

Almost 6,000 potential students will attend Loughborough University’s open days tomorrow and Saturday (27 and 28 June), to see the University campus, learn more about the courses and sample the Loughborough experience for themselves.

The open days run from 9.30am to 3.30pm each day with a range of information, presentations and exhibitions on offer, as well as tours of facilities and the chance to talk to current Loughborough students.

“We want to provide visitors with a comprehensive overview of what it’s like to be a student at Loughborough,” says Sarah Hannaford, Head of Student Recruitment and Admissions.

“There will be opportunities to talk to lecturers and students about the courses we offer, and many departments will be opening their lecture theatres, labs and studios for students to see where they’d be studying if they were to choose the University. Visitors can also look around the accommodation we have here on campus, find out how much it would cost to come to Loughborough and, importantly, what sources of financial support might be available to them.”

Charlotte Davison attended one of Loughborough’s open days in 2010 and has now just completed the final year of her History and Geography degree at the University.

“Loughborough was already top of my list, but coming along to the open day made me realise that I really wanted to come here. There was a real buzz about the place,” she comments.

“I got to chat to some of the students who were already on the course I was interested in – that gave me a really good insight into what the course is like. I was also able to see one of the on-campus halls of residence and find out about the wide variety of the things I could get involved in over and above my studies.

“By the end of my visit my heart was set on Loughborough. Four years later, I’m one of the student volunteers at this year’s open days. I can’t wait to tell the next generation of Loughborough students how great this place is!”

Open days are now an integral part of the research process for students, says Sarah Hannaford.

“Students are very discerning these days. They want to ensure that the universities they’re considering can meet, or even better, their expectations.

“Loughborough has some of the top-rated courses in the country, an award-winning student experience, and is the best university for sport, so we can offer students something that’s very special and distinctive among the UK’s universities,” she says.

Including the students’ friends and family, Loughborough will welcome more than 13,000 people in total to the campus over the two days – a rise of more than 8% on last year.

“It will be busy,” says Sarah, “but we have one of the largest single-site campuses in the country so there will be plenty of space for everyone!”

Two more open days will take place at Loughborough University in the autumn, on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 September. To book a place at the September events or to find out more go to www.lboro.ac.uk/opendays/
