Areas of expertise
Expertise: Control engineering, control technology, railway technology, magnetic levitation (Maglev) systems, mechatronics
Professor Goodall has a longstanding experience in applications of advanced control engineering concepts, principally for railways and aircraft.
His experience of railways has focussed upon applying control to the rail vehicle suspension systems, but this has extended into track switching technology, also to concepts for future rail systems.
His aircraft-related work has mainly been in the context of flight control systems, in particular, advanced concepts for sensor systems.
Professor Goodall works at the University part-time. He is a Fellow of the UK’s Royal Academy of Engineering and has received a number of awards including the Institution of Mechanical Engineer’s James Watt International Gold Medal and a Lifetime Achievement in Mechatronic Systems award from the International Federation of Automatic Control.
