‌What is in this guide?

This guide lists a selection of apps to assist your learning. The apps listed are free and almost all of them are available for Apple and Android devices.

 

myLboro App

Don't forget to download the myLboro app which offers a comprehensive digital guide to Loughborough University.‌

The app includes your timetable, e-mails, key dates and study support as well as a wealth of content on topics from IT Advice to health and well-being. Use the Library tile to view your loans and reservations and find links to the Library catalogue, Library room booking system and view opening hours. App Block: Stay Focussed

Block distracting applications temporarily on your device so that you can stay focussed, particularly when studying or revising. The blocker app can be activated for a precise time and date, and once the pre-set time duration is over, the blocked apps can be used again. More on App Block: Stay Focussed (Android devices)

CamScanner HD

Scan (i.e. digitise) paper documents using the camera in your mobile device; save the scanned documents as JPG or PDF files; edit and annotate image and text (CamScanner HD can recognize alphabetical characters); share your scans via the cloud or email. Cisco AnyConnect

VPN client for mobile devices: this is necessary for searching for and downloading any e-resources (including research publications) that Loughborough University subscribes to. More on AnyConnect (Apple devices) (Android devices)

EduCalc Classic

Focus Keeper: Time management

Timer which helps you focus your work into timed chunks with a short break between each activity. Focus on a task until the timer rings then take a break. Customize the length of the focus sessions and breaks. Track your progress with charts. More on Focus Keeper Free (Apple devices) (Android devices)

Forest – Stay Focused

App which helps you focus on your work. Use the app to plant a tree and it will grow for 30 minutes while you are working. Switch away from the app and the tree will die. There are opportunities to earn rewards and unlock additional features. The app producers collaborate with a tree-planting organization to plant real trees. (Apple devices) (Android devices)

Mendeley

App version of the referencing software tool supported by the University. (Apple devices) (Android devices) More on Mendeley.

Microsoft Office Lens - PDF scanner

Office Lens trims, enhances, and makes pictures of whiteboards and documents readable. You can use Office Lens to convert images to PDF, Word and PowerPoint files, and save to OneNote,  OneDrive, or your local device. Microsoft Teams

Organize and attend online meetings, share notes, files and task lists. (Apple devices) (Android devices)

Trello

Zen Kit To Do

Acceleread

Learn how to become a faster, more effective reader in as little as 10 days! Unlearn old habits, increase your retention and recall and curb unintentional mind-wandering. Apple devices only. Find similar apps for Android.

FB Reader

An e-book reading app covering formats such as ePub and Kindle with PDF available via a plugin in the free version. You can synchronise book collection, reading positions and bookmarks across devices. The app includes a free plugin for text to speech (Android devices)

Feedly

Organise, read and share the content of your favourite blogs, news sites, YouTube channels, RSS feeds etc. More on Feedly (Apple devices) (Android devices)

Goodreads

Discover book recommendations, keep track of what you want to read, review the books you've read. Includes a barcode scanner to add a book to your "to read" shelf. More on Goodreads (Apple devices) (Android devices)

Pocket

SimplyE

A free e-reader app from New York Public Library which enables you to read e-books of out of copyright texts. Includes over 300,000 titles. More on SimplyE (Apple devices) (Android devices)

SimpleMind

Evernote

Google Docs

Microsoft Word

LinkedIn Learning (formerly Lynda.com)

LinkedIn Learning is a learning platform which has over 5000 video tutorials you can use to develop your creative, software, technology and business skills.. Watch courses and videos on topics about your interests to enhance your personal skills.

Download courses to watch offline. On completing a course, receive a certificate to display on your LinkedIn page.  Available on Apple and Android. More information about LinkedIn Learning.
