Husband of late Loughborough colleague to undertake fundraising challenge in her memory

The husband of a late staff member who was described as a ‘heartwarming, colourful and beautiful person’ is undergoing training for the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge in her memory.

Rosy Chetwynd-Appleton, who was based in the School of Design and Creative Arts and worked as a Technical Tutor in Weave, was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of appendix cancer last year. Sadly, Rosy passed away a few months later on 23 December aged 35.

During her final weeks, Rosy and her loved ones received ongoing support from LOROS (Leicestershire and Rutland Hospice), a local charity which aims to enhance the quality of life of adult patients with cancer, progressive neurological conditions and end-stage organ failure, for whom curative treatment is no longer possible. They provide free support to more than 2,500 patients and families every year and are based in Glenfield, Leicestershire.

To help raise vital funds for LOROS, Rosy’s late husband Michael Manger will be undertaking the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge in April alongside 13 friends. The challenge will consist of climbing the peaks of Snowdon, Cadair Idris and Pen y Fan from 28 April to 1 May 2023.

The group has set up a dedicated JustGiving page which has already received an incredible £6,561 from 294 supporters at the time of writing. Michael hopes that he can achieve a target of £10,000 by the time he completes the challenge.

On the fundraising page, Michael wrote: “The care, attention, and warm welcome we received from LOROS, a hospice for patients who sadly are losing their lives, were second to none. Incredible staff, facilities and care around the clock. This service is also for family members too which helped mine and Rosy’s immediate family ever so much. LOROS relies on donation to provide for the people who need it most.

“I want to raise awareness of how important this type of care is. You never know when you, a family member, friend or colleague may require it yourselves.”

A touching tribute has also been paid to Rosy in a special edition of the Loughborough University Technical newsletter. In it, she is described as a ‘good friend’, who was ‘an inspiration to many’ and 'a wonderful person to be around’.
