Support for staff impacted by schoolteachers’ industrial action

You may have seen the media coverage of the teaching unions’ industrial action and that schools in England may be affected on 1 February. For colleagues with school-age children, the guidance for responding to the impact is below.

Our guiding principle is that we want to enable colleagues to work as normally as possible, acknowledging the wide range of roles we have at the University and the variable impact the industrial action may have.  However, it is important you discuss your preference with your manager in advance before making any changes to your normal working arrangements.

If you have any questions, please ask your manager for assistance, or HR Business Partners if you prefer.

  • You may work from home if this is feasible for your role and you are able to work with your children at home and your manager agrees this is OK
  • It may be possible for you to vary your working hours around your children – please make sure your manager is OK with you doing this
  • If you think it is not realistic to work (perhaps because of the age of your children) and you use the flexi-time scheme, you can use flexi (in accordance with the scheme rules including notifying your manager) and make up the time at a later date
  • If none of these options work for you, you can request to use the Other Family Related Leave Policy
  • You can also request annual leave or unpaid leave at short notice if necessary – for example if your cover arrangements fall through.

We expect managers to respond sympathetically and seek HR advice if they are unsure how to deal with a request.
