Give ‘n’ Go scheme donates hundreds of items to local charities

Last year, the University’s Sustainability team, with the help of staff volunteers, carried out their annual Give ‘n’ Go campaign.

The scheme was designed to encourage students to donate their unwanted but still valuable items to charity, rather than put them in the general waste.

Fourteen donation drop-off points were made available around campus in July to accommodate students moving out for the summer and in September for postgraduate students moving out.

An impressive amount was donated and diverted from general waste this year. Staff volunteers helped, making a significant difference by engaging with students and parents, sorting donations, and managing waste and recycling from the halls.

The donation figures for the Give ‘n’ Go were as follows:

  • 45+ large bags of bedding given to Trent Arches Project and 5+ bags of bedding given to Dog’s Trust.
  • 40+ crates of food given to Shepshed Food Bank.
  • 735 bags of clothing and accessories given to British Heart Foundation (including the permanent banks on campus).
  • 6 bags of toiletries given to Trent Arches Project.
  • 30+ crates of pots, pans, crockery, and cutlery to Trent Arches Project.

Environmental Manager, Nik Hunt commented: “We continue to make progress with the volume and types of donations we have been able to give to local and national charities, and it’s especially rewarding to hear about their impact in the current economic climate.  Our volunteers worked hard to gather the donations and put them to best use.

“There is, however, still more to be done to prevent good resources from going to waste, not just at the end of the academic year but at the end of each term. We will therefore continue working across campus, throughout the year, to raise awareness of the scheme in order to divert even more items from landfill and reduce environmental impact.”

The Give ‘n’ Go campaign will be running again in 2023.
