Winning projects from the Race Equality Charter budget announced

Loughborough University is on an exciting journey to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion across our campuses.

We recognise there is a long way to go before we realise our aspirations for a truly vibrant and inclusive community, but to help embed and seek contributions from across our community, the University has earmarked funds for Loughborough staff and students to carry out equity projects that will help create a fairer and more inclusive organisation.

Our first programme of projects has focused on race equity, which we hope will provide a reference point to support work across all the protected characteristics and their intersections.

Members of our community were recently invited to bid for funds under the race equity programme, as we realised there was a need for financial and people resource to deliver our Race Equality Charter action plan and implement the University’s Race Equity Strategy (LURES).

We received 17 applications in total and are delighted to announce that five were successful.

The successful project bids are as follows:

  • Enhancing the BAME Student experience in the School of Social Sciences - Dr Iris Wigger (lead applicant), Dr Elizabeth Mavroudi (SSH EDI Co-leads), Professor Louise Holt

  • Liberation of Identity and Arts - Iman Hadya Niazi Khan

  • Why a PhD? Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Student Pathways into a PhD community event -  Iman Hadya Niazi Khan, Clara Searle, Rhianna Garrett

  • Preparing young people for Uni - Upskilling parents from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic backgrounds - Lynda Nyandu

  • Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic support and social group in the School of Design and Creative Arts - Mazher Mohammed

The impact of these projects will be evaluated and communicated to the wider community upon their completion. We would like to offer our congratulations and support for this extraordinary achievement.

If the milestone feats of our successful budget bidders have inspired you to undertake a race equity project that fits our REC and LURES priorities then we would like to hear from you so we can advise you on how you could advance our race equity journey at Loughborough University.

The next round of budget bids will be held in the Autumn 2023.  More information about this process will be released in due course. Find out more and read the budget principles.
