Brianna Ghey

Brianna Ghey, a 16-year-old transgender girl from Birchwood, Cheshire, was tragically murdered on 11 February in a local park.

We understand that our University community, particularly trans staff and students, may be feeling distressed and alarmed at the news.  

Vigils will be taking place in Nottingham and Leicester today and tomorrow for those who would like to attend: 

  • Nottingham: Friday 17 February, 7pm - Speaker's Corner/Brian Clough statue, King Street, NG1 2AS 

  • Leicester: Saturday 18 February, 5.30pm - Clocktower, Eastgates, LE1 5YA 

We would also like to highlight the Trans and Non-binary Support and Advice Service available to both staff and students. It provides space and time, as well as a friendly face and a listening ear, for individuals to access support and advice in a way that is right for them.

Student Support 

  • Student Services (Email: studentservices@lboro.ac.uk, Tel: 01509 222765) offers a range of support, including mental health and wellbeing, and advice specifically for international students. The Student Wellbeing and Inclusivity team run a BAME Support Group which meets on the second Wednesday of every month via MS Teams. This is a safe space to share experiences and listen to others. One-to-one support with an advisor is also available. If you would like to access this support, please complete the online referral form.   

  • The University Chaplaincy (Email: cfschaplains@lboro.ac.uk, Tel: 01509 223741) offers a space for quiet reflection. University Chaplains are here to listen, here to care and here to help all staff and students. No appointment is necessary.      

  • If you feel your studies are being affected, you can contact your Academic School and/or Personal Tutors so that we can provide the right support to you. If you wish, you can also submit an individual Mitigating Circumstances claim to explain how you have been impacted by recent events. More information on this can be found in the Student Handbook.    

Staff Support 

  • The Staff Counselling Service is available to all University employees, giving you the opportunity to talk confidentially to a professionally trained person who is outside your immediate situation. Colleagues can also access support through our Employee Assistance Programme. More information on both of these services can be found on our People and Organisational Development website.     

  • BAME-specific counselling is also available to staff. To access this service, please email Diddy Elliot, Counselling Practice Lead d.elliott@lboro.ac.uk – all details will be kept confidential.
