Staff: Find out about support for parents and guardians

There are a number of policies in place to support staff members with children, as well as a bank of wellbeing resources that can be accessed for free.

Policies and procedures for parents and guardians

The University offers both maternity and paternity leave, as well as shared parental leave and adoption leave. Staff are entitled to paid time-off for ante-natal classes and hospital appointments.

There are Keeping In Touch (KIT) days for those on maternity or adoption leave, that provide opportunities to go into work to undertake training and check-in with teams without bringing the period of leave to an end. The University also offers Shared Parental Leave In Touch (SPLIT) days in addition to the 10 KIT days.

The University recognises that there may be many reasons why colleagues may need additional paid leave related to family circumstances, including:

  • Attending fertility treatment appointments
  • Attending pre-adoption match appointments
  • Instances for where neonatal care is needed after pregnancy
  • Phased return to work following extended family leave
  • Adapting to new family arrangements, such as becoming a step-parent
  • Caring for dependent or elderly family members
  • Miscarriage

This policy aims to give managers greater ability to support and cater for the needs of their team. Managers are encouraged to discuss with colleagues and agree short term arrangements to support the need for Other Family Related Leave, whilst in addition giving consideration to the options available through the Flexibly Working Policy.

All eligible staff have the right to ask that their employer consider their proposal for flexible working conditions. Examples include:

  • Part-time working
  • Term-time working
  • Job-sharing
  • Flexitime
  • Career breaks

Wellbeing support for all the family

The University offers an Employee Assistance Programme, provided by Health Assured. This is a 24/7 service completely independent from the University and support includes webinars, online counselling and resources. They also offer an app – My Healthy Advantage – which has proactive wellbeing advice, four-week programmes, Spotify playlists and more. The EAP provides confidential, unlimited support on any matter that may be of concern to you and your immediate family members – spouse/partner and children ages 16 to 24 in full time education, living in the same household.
