Royce Hall students and staff run 100 laps in memory of alumnus

On Wednesday, students living at Royce Hall took part in an annual tradition to run 100 laps of their halls of residence in memory of former student, Peter Holmes.

Peter sadly died in a tragic accident in 2010 whilst snowshoeing at Goat Mountain, located north of Vancouver in Canada.

The annual event is inspired by Peter’s previous efforts as RAG rep for Royce Hall, when he completed the very same challenge to raise money for charity during his time at Loughborough. It is now the Hall’s largest RAG event.

Those who participate in the challenge run the equivalent of 17 miles and can enter as individuals or teams. The Hall successfully raised over £500 for Alzheimer's Society from the event which took place last month.

The individual men’s winner of this year’s event was Ben Draper, who completed the route in 1 hour 39 minutes. The individual women’s winner was Abi Baines, who secured a time of 1 hour 49 minutes.

Royce Hall Warden Professor Mark King commented: “Royce 100 in memory of Peter Holmes is a much loved and integral part of the Royce calendar. Hundreds have tried to repeat the run that Peter Holmes did to show his dedication to Royce and to raise money for charity. As warden, it is brilliant to be a part of the event seeing the whole of the Royce community come together.”

Hall Chair Jack Haddock added: “The Royce 100 is the first major event the new committee puts on each year, generally providing a good chance for them to prove themselves. I think it’s safe to say that we passed with flying colours! With Royce having such a decorated history, there are some big shoes to fill, but I think our new committee is up to the task.”
