Let’s Talk Loughborough delves into all things careers in its latest episode

Sophie Hyde from the Careers Network, recent graduate and entrepreneur Joseph Bentley, and current student Subomi Lawal join the podcast to discuss how Loughborough University provides careers support and opportunities for students.

This episode answers questions submitted by students around internships, placements, finding a job as an international student and support after graduating. It also includes information about the Student Success Academy, the latest initiative by the Careers Network which aims to ensure students get the most out of their time at the University, setting them up for career success after they finish their degree.

Joseph Bentley designed REACT (Rapid Emergency Actuating Tamponade), a device that can reduce blood loss from a knife wound, as part of his final year project here at Loughborough. He discusses how the University’s entrepreneurial hub, The Studio has helped him turn this project into a viable business venture that is ready to be taken to market.

Subomi also discusses how she has benefited from the Future Black Talent programme, helping her to secure a placement at graduate-run business, Hashtag Me. Support from the programme helped to boost her confidence when applying for positions and she was also offered a job at Hashtag Me after completing her placement, which she does alongside her studies.

The guests gave their best advice to students listening who may be feeling unsure about their careers. Subomi said: “Don’t be afraid to reach out for help, everyone is always willing to help and I’ve learnt that at Loughborough.”

Sophie added: “If for some reason something doesn’t work out – that’s ok. The learning you are going to get from that is going to develop so many other skills - your resilience, your confidence, your motivation.

“It’s ok to fail and if you need someone to remind you of that and support you – that’s what we are here for.”

Let’s Talk Loughborough is available to listen to on all mainstream podcast platforms including Apple Podcasts and Spotify. It can also be viewed on the University’s YouTube channel
