Doctoral Researchers and supporting staff celebrated at Loughborough’s annual PhD Awards

The University’s Doctoral College recently recognised the outstanding contributions and successes of Doctoral Researchers across both campuses at the Loughborough University PhD Awards 2022 ceremony.

Organised by the Doctoral Researchers Presidential team, more than 100 people attended the event, including the Vice Chancellor Professor Nick Jennings and the Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Doctoral College, Professor Steve Christie. 

The award categories and their winners were as follows: 

  • Supervisory Team of the Year – Dr Dong Li, Professor Jiyin Liu and Dr Wendy Jiao 

  • Contribution to Doctoral Researcher Development – Dr Matt Vidal 

  • Pete Beaman Unsung Hero – Berkeley Young 

  • Open Research Excellence – Petra Salaric, Beth Woollacott and Lars Claussen 

  • Contribution to Knowledge – Zhi Hu  

  • Doctoral Researcher Community Engagement – Artemi Tonikidou 

  • Teaching Excellence – Theodoros Marinopoulos 

  • Contribution to Wider Community – Ruby Appiah-Campbell 

  • Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Champion – Rhianna Garrett 

  • Sub-warden of the Year – Wole Adaramove  

  • Team of the Year – Organising Committee of the Midlands Graduate School (MGS) Doctoral Training Partnership Conference 

  • DR (Doctoral Researchers) President’s Award – Aakash Bansal 

In addition to the list above, two special recognition awards were presented. Firstly, Dr Duncan Stanley, who recently left the University after working in the Doctoral College as a Research Staff and Student Development Advisor for many years, was recognised for his services to the Doctoral Researcher community. The Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research Professor Steve Rothberg was also recognised for his contributions in the role before he is succeeded by Professor Dan Parsons.  

Professor Steve Christie commented: “These awards show the fantastic range of activities and depth of the abilities of our Doctoral Researchers. After a few years of curtailed events, this was a great celebration for our Doctoral Community. With the new University strategy having research and innovation and student experience as two of its aims, the Doctoral College is at the core of helping to deliver the strategy.”
