What Is The Time - Paula Morison art exhibition

Letters received as part of What Is (The) Time (c) by Paula Morison

What Is (the) Time?

Artist, Paula Morison, explored time in relation to how we communicate in her collaborative mail art project, What Is (the) Time? for Radar’s On Time project.

In February 2021, Paula began sending letters to people, including students, academics and other staff members from Loughborough University, asking one question – what is the time?

The responses range from the literal – simply stating the time at the moment of replying – to artwork, betting tips and musings on time as a concept. Paula is still in correspondence with many of those she initially sent letters to and now you can view this body of letters in an online archive here.

Responses from Loughborough colleagues included:

  • David Bell - Radar and LU Arts Coordinator
  • Arianna Maiorani - Senior Lecturer in Linguistics and IAS Time Theme Lead
  • Amy Conti - Fine Art BA Student
  • Ksenia Chmutina - Reader in Sustainable and Resilient Urbanism
  • Laura Evans - Fine Art BA Student
  • Martha Jordan - Fine Art BA Student
  • Claire Warwick - Professor of Digital Humanities, Durham University and IAS Time theme Visiting Fellow
  • Marsha Meskimmon - Professor of Transnational Art and Feminism and Director of the Institute of Advanced Studies
  • Meghan Sullivan - Professor of Philosophy, Notre Dame University and IAS TIme theme Visiting Fellow
  • Peter Kawalek - Professor of Information Management and IAS Time Theme Lead

Paula’s work is conceptually led and uses a variety of media. She especially enjoys working with data, time and things that can be measured and recorded. In 2018 Paula was selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries which toured to South London Gallery, London and Liverpool School of Art & Design during the Liverpool Biennial. The same year she was also the recipient of the Red Mansion Art Prize which enabled her to undertake a month-long residency in Beijing. In response to this trip, she made work around language, which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in May 2019. During 2019 Morison also exhibited at g39 in Cardiff, Daniel Benjamin Gallery in London and PS Mirabel in Manchester, and was shortlisted for The Clifford Chance Purchase Prize for printmaking. In 2020 Morison completed her first solo show in London at A Room Upstairs Gallery.

What Is (the) Time? was commissioned by Radar and Extra Ordinary People from Eastside Projects in response to Loughborough’s Institute of Advanced Studies Time Theme.
