Midlands Innovation: The latest resources and upcoming events for technicians

Midlands Innovation – a collaboration between eight research-intensive universities – is dedicated to supporting technicians across the Midlands.

As part of this initiative, Loughborough technicians can find out more about upcoming events and training courses below, plus a useful resource on the variety of ways to fund technical staff in research.

Higher Education Technician Summit

The Higher Education Technician Summit (HETS) takes place 10 November and will celebrate the success and achievements of technicians in higher education and research.

The event will be held at the East Midlands Conference Centre from 9am-4.30pm and will feature speakers such as Professor Dame Ottoline Leyser (Chief Executive of UK Research and Innovation), Professor Andy Long (Provost Deputy Vice-Chancellor, University of Nottingham) and Fran Scott (Engineering Presenter and Pyrotechnician).

There will also be a number of workshops delivered on the day, as well as a presentation of the Papin Prizes. Technicians of all abilities and disciplines are welcome to attend for free and can register online.

Autumn Technician Training Programme

To support the career development of technicians, Midlands Innovation is delighted to offer a range of opportunities for technicians this autumn, which are now available to book onto.

Some of the new courses include:

  • Introduction to Project Management for Technicians
  • Establishing a Technical Project – Scope, Vision, Charters
  • Introduction to Valuing Diversity and Increasing Inclusivity

Funding Technical Staff in Research: An explainer document for research teams

In a bid to strengthen the technical workforce to create future opportunities for technicians in higher education and research, a new resource has been published by TALENT, the Technician Commitment and URKI.

Funding Technical Staff in Research provides clarification around the variety of funding routes and mechanisms within the research and innovation sector and insights that will support planning and funding for technical roles.
