Participants required for new study

Colleagues from Loughborough University are recruiting participants for a new study.

Led by Jordan Fenton, Dr James King, Dr Sven Hoekstra and Professor Vicky Tolfrey from the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences the project will explore how cognitive factors influence eating behaviours in persons with a spinal cord injury (SCI) compared to able-bodied people.

Participants will need to meet the following criteria to partake:

Inclusion criteria

  • Male or female
  • 18-64 years of age
  • Metabolically healthy – No known cardiovascular or metabolic disease such as diabetes, respiratory or heart disease
  • Non-smoker
  • Weight stable in the past three months
  • Open to both persons with a spinal cord injury (SCI) and able-bodied people

Exclusion criteria

  • Lactose intolerance
  • Gluten allergy
  • Individuals with vegan diets (cheese, milk and honey are included in study foods)
  • Other food allergies interfering with consumption of foods involved in the study

Participants will be asked to attend two sessions where the following measures will be taken:

  • Body composition (the percentage of muscle and fat mass in your body)
  • Resting metabolic rate (the number of calories your body burns per day)
  • Dietary behaviours (via questionnaires)
  • Food intake (using study foods and a food diary)

The results will support each participant’s diet / nutrition, future scientific publications, and contribute to Jordan’s PhD thesis.
