Action Short of a Strike – Clarification

When balloting its members UCU indicated that action short of a strike may take place in the following forms:

  • working to contract
  • not covering for absent colleagues
  • removing uploaded materials related to, and/or not sharing materials related to, lectures or classes that will be or have been cancelled as a result of strike action
  • not rescheduling lectures or classes cancelled due to strike action
  • not undertaking any voluntary activities
  • undertaking a marking and assessment boycott

However, UCU has notified the University that with effect from 1 December, staff taking industrial action will take action short of a strike in the following forms only:

  • working to contract
  • not undertaking any voluntary activities

This means that only working to contract and not undertaking any voluntary activities are forms of action short of a strike are protected actions currently. For clarity, the other activities listed, including marking and assessment boycotts, are not currently part of industrial action. If you are unsure of whether the action you propose to take is covered by the current industrial action mandate, please speak to a member of the local UCU branch or your HR Partner. This situation may change in the future.
