Email security improvements for returning students

This notice only applies to all returning students who are not using Microsoft Outlook on their computer or mobile devices to connect to their University email account.

Microsoft has announced that it will be changing the way your username and password are being checked when you read emails and check calendars using apps that are not Microsoft Outlook. This is the only University supported email, contact and calendar app. Other apps may work, however, IT Services are unable to offer support for these.

If you are not currently using Microsoft Outlook, you may be prompted to re-enter your username and password so your device can remember the newer more secure way of checking your details. As part of this setup, you may be asked to use the DUO MFA application to complete this process.

During the week commencing 6 September 2021 we will be improving the security settings on your University Exchange-based email account.

It is important to note that any apps/software that you have configured to connect to your Exchange mailbox will be affected.

This could include Calendar, Contacts, and Tasks/ToDo apps on your computer or mobile device. You may need to re-enter your username and password in all of these apps as well as any non-Outlook email app. If you are affected you will need to re-enter your username and password in all of these apps as well as any non-Outlook email app, you may also need to delete and recreate your account on the device. If you receive repeated prompts to re-enter your username and password it is likely that the app/software you are using does not support this change. You will need to use Microsoft Outlook in this case.

IT Services will never request your password or personal details by email, so please continue to be vigilant for email phishing scams. More details are available on the IT Services website.

If you have any support questions, please contact the IT Service Desk by email at IT.Services@lboro.ac.uk
