Gold rush for Loughborough in the mixed Olympic relays

Loughborough athletes played a starring role for Team GB as the country won gold in two of the new mixed relay events at the Tokyo Olympics.

Adam Peaty, Anna Hopkin, and Alex Yee took Loughborough’s medal tally to seven in an unbelievable day for British sport on Saturday.

The inaugural Olympic triathlon mixed relay title – featuring Yee – was followed by a world record victory for Hopkin and Peaty in the mixed 4x100m medley in the pool.

Yee contributed to a superb team performance as he pulled clear in the final stages to help Great Britain finish fourteen seconds clear of the United States. The win adds to Yee’s individual silver earlier in the week.

‌The British swimming quartet – including Loughborough’s Adam Peaty and Anna Hopkin – set a new world record in three minutes 37.58 seconds in dramatic fashion.

The gold is Peaty's second in Tokyo after the 100m breaststroke and is the fourteenth world record he’s broken in an already glittering career.

Following the race, Peaty spoke to BBC sport:

"One word has changed the whole British team - belief. We believe we can win, we believe we can get world records. If you have belief, you can build everything around that and we showed that here."

Team GB finished ahead of second-placed China, while Australia took the bronze.
