Bookings now open for this year’s Doctoral Wellbeing Fortnight

Following the success of the first Doctoral Wellbeing Week in 2020, we are delighted to announce that bookings are now open for this year’s event, taking place from 1 March to coincide with University Mental Health Day.

Aimed at Doctoral Researchers and those on the frontline of their support (such as supervisors), Loughborough’s Doctoral Wellbeing Fortnight will contain a diverse range of developmental workshops and activities to provide practical ways of enhancing doctoral wellbeing.

The event will feature over 40 sessions, covering numerous topics that are aligned to the University’s wellbeing resources and relate to Doctoral Researcher feedback as well as evidence from a growing body of literature.

Event organiser Dr Katryna Kalawsky, said: “At Loughborough, we recognise and value the vast contributions that Doctoral Researchers make. To enable them to achieve their full potential, we need to take a proactive and responsive approach to support and enhance their wellbeing, especially since many challenges faced are different to the taught student populations.

“Whilst wellbeing is important 24/7, 365 days a year, we hope the fortnight will increase awareness of the various support services available, and that it equips our Doctoral Researchers with an extensive array of practical skills that they can apply throughout their doctorate and beyond.”

Katryna added: “The Doctoral Wellbeing Fortnight is a huge collaborative effort with input from a wide range of colleagues internal and external to the institution including Doctoral Researchers and alumni. It is wonderful that so many people are planning to share their expertise and give their time so willingly during such challenging times – a huge thank you in advance to everyone involved!”

Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor (Doctoral College), Professor Elizabeth Peel commented: “While of course Doctoral Researcher wellbeing is important every day of the year, I am delighted that we’re shining a spotlight on wellbeing again this year – and over a longer period.

“Visibility and value are key to Loughborough’s Doctoral College strategy, and a focused suite of events such as these help in ensuring that the doctoral journey - with its ups and downs - is rewarding, fulfilling and fun. There will be sessions during this fortnight guaranteed to excite and inspire our Doctoral Researchers and colleagues across both our campuses. I am excited to be participating and I hope you do too.”

Pro Vice-Chancellor of Research, Professor Steve Rothberg, said: “It’s never been more important for us all to look after our own wellbeing and the wellbeing of family, friends and colleagues. Last year’s event was a great success and I encourage everybody to look at the programme and take time out to join some of the sessions.”

Please note that all sessions will take place online and most sessions will be recorded for the benefit of those unable to attend in ‘real-time’.
