The Legal Services team – which was formed in 2019 – provides professional advice to the University on contracts, intellectual property (IP), company, property law and much more. It is made up of experienced solicitors and professionals and is part of the extended Vice-Chancellor’s Office team.

The Law Society represents all solicitors in England and Wales, including those working in the private and public sectors. Each year, it holds the Excellence in Law awards to recognise the outstanding contribution of teams and individuals within the profession.

The In-House Team of the Year category celebrates legal teams based in-house which have demonstrated innovation in the way they work and made a tangible contribution to the success of their organisation as a whole.

The team from Loughborough was shortlisted because of its impact in the following areas:

  • Supporting the University’s IP commercialisation and Spin Out agenda
  • Their drive to support colleagues across the University, and identifying where they can add the most value
  • Their innovative approach to recruitment and staff development
  • Collaborating with public and private partners
  • Helping to support self-isolating students by working in the Covid-19 Logistics hub in the last academic year.

Head of Legal Services Sam McGinty commented: “As a small team, which didn’t exist at the start of 2019, it’s a huge honour to have our hard work and our innovative and collegiate approach to supporting the University recognised by the Law Society and to be shortlisted for this prestigious award.

“We are the only University legal team to be shortlisted in the In-House Team of the Year category and are in the esteemed company of several household names on the shortlist.”

The President of the Society I. Stephanie Boyce said: “The award entries we have received have been of an incredibly high standard and, despite a challenging year for solicitors, are a testament to the outstanding work accomplished across the legal profession.”

The winners will be announced at the online awards ceremony, which takes place on 7 October.
