2020/2021 Pay Award

National pay negotiations between the Joint Higher Education Trade Unions and UCEA, the higher education sector representative body, met on 7 July to consider the 2020/21 pay round. UCEA welcomed the Union’s understanding and analysis of the scale of the financial challenge facing the sector.

The outcome of the meeting is a pay freeze for the current year. This relates to the nationally negotiated percentage uplift to all salaries, not incrementation where this applies to staff. This outcome is due to the severe risks to the financial sustainability of the sector as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

While this will be disappointing, the saving achieved from the pay freeze will contribute 20% of the £10 million that we need to find through cost reduction (see: https://internal.lboro.ac.uk/info/financial-sustainability/).
