Five of the six students have been awarded the Engineering Horizons Bursary. These are given to students and apprentices within the UK who are passionate about engineering and have taken up a place on an engineering or technology degree course which has been accredited or approved by the IET, and whom may have experienced personal obstacles or financial difficulties to get to where they are today.
The Loughborough student recipients are as follows:
- James Bancroft – BEng Robotics, Mechatronics and Control Engineering
- Rhiannon Edwards – MEng Electronic and Electrical Engineering
- Iulian Gherghel - BEng Electronic and Computer Systems Engineering
- Jack Keeley – BEng Electronic and Computer Systems Engineering
- Esha Mistry – BEng Mechanical Engineering
In addition, Imogen Relf – who studies Sports Technology at Loughborough – was named a recipient of the Diamond Jubilee Scholarship; awarded to students who have achieved at least AAB in their A-Level or Advanced Highers results, and have also accepted a place on an IET accredited engineering or technology degree course in Autumn 2019.
The students will all receive between £1,000-£3,000 each year for the duration of their degree to support their studies, whilst also benefitting from mentoring and work experience opportunities through the IET’s extensive networks.
Speaking about his bursary, James Bancroft said: “This will help to relieve financial stress by providing a source of income that I can use to buy equipment and resources for my course, including textbooks, specialist tools and Arduino Sensors. It will also allow me to attend any paid engineering events that I find of interest, network with other dedicated engineers and share ideas.”
Diamond Jubilee Scholarship recipient Imogen Relf added: “This scholarship has enabled and motivated me to excel as I continue to study my degree so that I can help to make a difference in the engineering world. It truly is an opportunity that I feel others should grasp with both hands.”
This year, Engineering Horizons Bursaries have been awarded to 84 engineering students, and 73 students have also been awarded Diamond Jubilee Scholarships.
